The magnificent Vishnu Temple, one of Gorakhpur city’s biggest tourist attractions, has its origins dating back to the Pal Dynasty of the 12th century. It stands as a silent witness to the rise and fall of various empires, while standing itself in all its grandeur. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple embraces the reverence of all Hindus.

Attractions of Vishnu Temple in Gorakhpur

The primary attraction of the Vishnu Temple is the famous statue of Lord Vishnu, made out of Black Stone, or “Pal Kalin Kalin Kasauti”. This statue is one of the city’s state protected monuments, and governmental agencies have a role to play in its preservation. There was an attempt to take over the statue to Britain during the British rule. However, a case was fought in the Privy Council of the United Kingom, and the Queen of Majhauli Raj regained the statue.

Apart from the statue of Lord Ram, united at this temple are the idles of the deities of other important Hindu shrines. At the four corners of the temple are the deities Jaganathpuri, Badrinath, Rameshwaram and Dwarika.

Festivals of Vishnu Temple in Gorakhpur

Apart from the customary temple festivals, the most important festival of the Vishnu Temple is the Dusshera festival. On the eve of this festival, the Ramleela is organized here. The temple itself is adorned magnificently, but the Ramleela procession that is organized here is by far the greatest tourist attraction of this place. In a world that is constantly changing to keep in pace with the times and to blend in with modern influences, this grand procession is the very embodiment of traditionalism.

Location of Vishnu Temple in Gorakhpur

The Vishnu Temple is located on the Medical College Road, at Asuran Chowk, approximately 3 kilometers from the city’s railway station. You can reach the Vishnu Temple by hiring a cycle-rickshaw or an auto-rickshaw from the city’s Dharmshala location. City buses ply to this area as well.

Tourists visit this place through the year. It is, however, best to visit during the Dusshera festival when the Ramleela procession is organized. Special poojas are also offered on Thursdays, for everyone. The temple is open from 6 am to 12 noon, and from 3 pm to 8:30 pm, on all days of the week.
