Kushinagar

Kushinagar is famous for being the place where Lord Buddha attained salvation, or breathed his last. It is the place where he gave his last sermons. In Kushinagar governments of China, Japan, Thailand and Sri Lanka have built many monuments, temples and buildings commemorating Buddha.

Nirvana Stupa is a huge stupa made of bricks. An inscription in Brahmi states that Lord Buddha's remains have been deposited here and even a copper vessel was unearthed at this site. Close by is Mathakuar Shrine, which has the image of Buddha in black stone and in “bhumi sparsha mudra.” It was at this place that Buddha delivered his last sermon. One kilometer away from this place is Ramabhar Stupa. It is the place where Lord Buddha was cremated. Another historic temple is Nirvana Temple where you can find a 6 meter long statue of reclining Buddha, which represents the dying Buddha.

In Kushinagar you can see the Japanese Temple, where a statue of Lord Buddha has been made of eight metals imported from Japan. Then you can also visit the Chinese Temple dedicated to Lord Buddha. Besides these, do not forget to go to Kushinagar Museum, where you can find displays of excavations found at the site. The Museum remains closed on Monday.

How to Reach Kushinagar

By Rail: Between Gorakhpur and Kushinagar there is no direct train. One option is to take Ljn Bju Express from Gorakhpur to Gauri Bazar and from there take a take to Kushinagar.

By Road: There is direct State Transport Bus from Gorakhpur to Kushinagar. You can also book a cab or taxi to go to Kushinagar.

Ayodhya

Ayodhya is a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus throughout the country, and even the world over. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, who is believed to be the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This city is known for its many temples, like the Nageshwarnath Temple, believed to have been built by Ram’s son, Kush. Also of note is the Chakra Harji Vishnu Temple. The Indian Government has built Tulsi Smarak Bhawan, which is dedicated to Tulsidas, the legendary writer who rewrote the Ramayana.

On a visit to The Kanak Bhawan you will find images of the gold-crowned dieties Ram and Sita. Another popular destination is Hanuman Garhi, which is shaped in a way that it resembles a four-sided fort, complete with basins at each corner of the fort. You can also visit the Dasrath Bhavan, which is said to have strong association with the father of Lord Rama, King Dasrath.

In Ayodhya, is Ram Janama Bhoomi, the site where Babri Masjid was destroyed in 1992. Nearby is Sita ki Rasoi, the place where it is believed that Sita cooked her first ever meal after she married Ram. Also do not forget to visit the ghats along the Saryu River known as Ram Ki Paidi. Another place worth seeing is the Mani Parbat, an elevated area which gives you enchanting and views of this age-old city.

By Rail: There are many trains between Gorakhpur and Ayodhya, like Gorakhpur-Yesvantpur Express, Nautanwa-Durg Express, Kamakhya-Jaipur Kavi Guru Express and Gorakhpur Ayodhya Passenger.

Faizabad

Faizabad is located on the banks of River Ghaghra, a small tributary of River Ganga. This town was founded by the Nawab of Bengal, Ali Vardi Khan in 1730. After a few years later, Shuja-ud-daula declared it as the capital of the Awadh region. The town has many historic buildings which remind us of its glorious past.

When in Faizabad do not forget to visit Faizabad Museum and Fort Calcutta. Monuments of the Mughal era, like Bahu Begum ka Maqbara and Moti Mahal also attract many visitors. There is also one monument dedicated to the first Jain tirthankara, Bhagwan Rishabhdev called the Rishabhdev Rajghat Udyan. Another important place to visit is The Guptar Ghat, where it is believed that Lord Ram took Jal Samadhi to leave the earth and enter the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

By Rail: There are three trains between Gorakhpur and Faizabad, which are Gorakhpur-Yesvantpur Express, Nautanwa-Durg Express and Kamakhya-Jaipur Kavi Guru Express.

By Road: There are many buses plying between the two cities. You can either take state transport bus or any of the private buses. There are also many taxi services available.

Jaunpur

The city of Jaunpur has a history that dates back to the 1359, during the days when it was called Sheeraz-e-Hind. Feroz Shah Tughlaq founded the city, and Jaunpur has many historical and holy sites that one can visit on a trip here. One of the famous tourist places is the Mughal Bridge, also known as Shahi Bridge or Munim Khan’s Bridge. It showcases the finery of architecture of the Mughal style.

Close to Shahi Bridge is The Royal Fort, also known as Shahi Quila. It is said that it was built by making use of the remnants of a temple that was destroyed by Mughal invaders. Also do not miss to see The Jama Masjid, built in the 15th century, at the time that Firoz Shah Tughlak reigned in India. By Road: There are no direct buses between Gorakhpur and Jaunpur. One option you have is to take State Transport Bus from Gorakhpur to Varanasi and then from Varanasi take Doon Express to travel to Jaunpur. Or else, travel by private taxi.

Varanasi

Varanasi is also known as Banaras and Kashi. It is said to be one of the oldest cities in the world. This city is highly revered by Hindus, because it is known as the city of Lord Shiva. You will find many temples dedicated to Shiva, like Kashi Vishwanath Temple and New Vishwanath Temple. Hindus believe that whoever dies or is cremated here will attain moksha, which means that the person will be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

One sight that mesmerizes many people is the aartis held at the many ghats along the sides of the river. Besides this, you will see people doing yoga, having massages, shaves and even playing cricket on the banks. One place you would never want to miss are the several ghats, or steps leading to the River Ganges. In Varanasi you can also go to see the Ram Nagar Fort, which is located on the other side of the river. And you can visit Jantar Mantar also, which is an observatory.

By Rail: There are five trains running between Gorakhpur and Varanasi, Gorakhpur-Pune Express, Chauri Chaura Express, Krishak Express, Kashi Express and Bhojpuri Express.

By Road: The connectivity between Gorakhpur and Varanasi is good. You can either take a state transport bus or any private bus. Taxi and cab services are also available.

Chandauli

Chandauli was founded by Chandra Sah, a Barhaulia Rajput of the family of Narotam Rai and, thus, from him came the name of the city. There is a fort built by his descendants, which attracts many visitors throughout the year. You can go to see Hakiya Kali Mandir and Baba Latifshah Tomb. Chandauli is famous for its Wildlife Sanctuary. It is home to several species of animals, birds and plants. Since not many people visit this place, so you observe nature in its raw form. This sanctuary was established to conserve the Asiatic lions, but it is home to several other animals and birds. In the sanctuary you will also find two mesmerizing waterfalls, Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls.
