Handloom Industry Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur's weavers have been around since ages past and the textile industry has taken turns in the years gone by. While handlooms are not longer receiving the importance they once did, there is much effort going on to revive this dying industry and provide weavers with all the assistance they need. There are presently over 6,600 looms from which towels, tablecloths, bed covers and other materials are produced.

Terracotta Products in Gorakhpur

Terracotta products are produced on the outskirts of the city as well as within the heart of Gorakhpur itself. Most of the terracotta products are the result of small home-based industries, usually with collaboration of village clusters.

Power Industry in Gorakhpur

The Jhansi electricity company set up the first power house in the Gorakhpur district in 1928, closely followed by the second. In time, the U.P. State Electricity Board took over production and management of these powerhouses.

Heavy Industry in Gorakhpur

In April 1963, the Fertilizer Corporation of India, Ltd. was set up near Nakha jungle railway station of Gorakhpur. It began production in Urea on January 1, 1969. It provides employment to thousands of people of the city and its surrounding regions. The Saraya Steel Complex which was established in 1974 deals with manufacturing steel from iron scrap from the North Eastern Railway workshop Gorakhpur. This place also provides employment for hundreds of workers.

Small Scale Industries in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur has a number of small-scale industries such as wheat flour, oils, biscuits, flour, dal, tobacco, furniture, soap, bricks, metalware and sports goods. Since 1956, the production of goods and further investment in small scale industries in this region have gone up. However, there has been a decrease in the number of people employed here. Most of the small scale industries are agriculture based or chemical based, further on diversifying into other manufacturing units.

Industrial Areas of Gorakhpur

There is a total of 187.35 acres of land acquired for industrial purpose in Gorakhpur. Of these, 38.35 acres of land have been developed and there are 25 units in industrial production at the present point of time.

Gorakhpur has a total of 2650 registered industrial units, of which medium and large units are 10 in number. Small scale industries employ 11200 daily workers, on an average.

Industrial Problems Faced By Gorakhpur

While there is much effort on to keep industries in Gorakhpur alive and provide employment for as many people as possible, there are some problems that tend to hinder these efforts at times. For one, there is a lack of availability of skilled man-power. There is also the problem of continuous power supply, which can hit production. Some areas do not have a proper drainage system. Technological and financial support is often lacking and financial problems tend to impact industrial production. There is also the problem of raw material availability and market access for products.

Industrial Aid in Gorakhpur

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has, in recent times, been looking into the industrial production of Gorakhpur as it is one of the most industrially developed districts of this state. It has been estimated that a total of Rs. 6,65,75, 000 will be required to be invested in the cottage industries of Gorakhpur, as well as its small scale industries. With much work going on to provide the needed finance and aid for industries to thrive, it is expected that in the next five year, there will be a marked increase in industrial potential in the region, as well as growth in employment.
