The Saraya Steel Complex which was established in 1974 deals with manufacturing steel from iron scrap from the North Eastern Railway workshop Gorakhpur. This place also provides employment for hundreds of workers.

Gorakhpur has a number of small-scale industries such as wheat flour, oils, biscuits, flour, dal, tobacco, furniture, soap, bricks, metalware and sports goods. Since 1956, the production of goods and further investment in small scale industries in this region have gone up. However, there has been a decrease in the number of people employed here. Most of the small scale industries are agriculture based or chemical based, further on diversifying into other manufacturing units.

For one, there is a lack of availability of skilled man-power. There is also the problem of continuous power supply, which can hit production. Some areas do not have a proper drainage system. Technological and financial support is often lacking and financial problems tend to impact industrial production. There is also the problem of raw material availability and market access for products.
